It is also about revealing deeper truths beneath the surface, transformation, renewal, adaptability and alchemy. In other words shed old habits, embrace new beginnings with ease and make time for your personal growth knowing that you will be even stronger on the other side.
Thank you to everyone who came out to Lincoln Center for the Burnt Sugar SmokeHouse last weekend. It was two nights of joy and amazing music! As you know, I debuted a couple of songs from my forthcoming “The Tao of Abbey Lincoln” project. It was a great start to this foray into the words, work and world of Abbey Lincoln. Much more to come! I’m excited to share that The Burnt Sugar Arkestra is releasing a brand new project that I’m featured on! It’s an album of two live recordings; Burnt Sugar at the Concert of Colors in Detroit and live from Paula's Barn in Ohio. Back in 2022 Burnt Sugar was on tour in Ohio and I casually mentioned to V. Jeffrey Smith that I always wanted to record in a barn. Next thing I knew he was pulling out equipment and setting it up in the barn! The rest is half of this new project If You Can’t Dazzle Them With Your Brilliance, Then Baffle Them With Your Blisluth, Pt. 2. I have such fond memories of these recordings. The album will be released on Friday February 7th, but you can pre-order now on the Burnt Sugar Bandcamp page.
I’m not giving you a long essay today. In fact I’m not giving you an essay today at all. There is so much going on in this country and around the world right now that I need a moment. I’ll be back in February with the fire for Black History Month and beyond. So in the spirit of “The Tao of Abbey Lincoln” I’ll leave you with some words from this great ancestor.
Take care of yourself. Take care of those in your community. Know your neighbors. Let go of what’s not necessary to hold on to. Be ready to move/shift in whatever form that takes. Have compassion. Lead with love.
